Introducing the CELt kitchen

Calderdale Ecological Land Trust (CELT) is launching a new project to provide healthy lunches made with climate friendly food for local people to come and enjoy. The idea is based on the idea of a social canteen which serves nutritious food, cooked from scratch to large groups of folk in their local community.   The concept of a Landed Community Kitchen, which is being developed by Coventry University, looks at providing locally grown agroecologcally food at a reasonable cost or on a pay-as-you-can basis for those that have to choose between heating or eating.  It is hoped it will function as a solidarity model rather than as charity.  Crucially, it does not rely on waste food provided by supermarkets which avoids the supermarket having to pay for landfill and just encourages continued wasteful production.

A series of monthly lunches are planned, initially at Wadsworth Community Centre which has a large kitchen and could potentially seat up to 100 people.  We are inviting local chefs to cook for us and the first one will star renowned chef Antonia from Antonia’s brilliant Supper Club.  We believe that young entrepreneurs whether cooks/chefs/ growers/farmers who are trying to help us fix a broken food system need to be paid fairly for their efforts. We have kindly received a small amount of funding from the Community Foundation for Calderdale to help subsidise meals for those strapped for cash. We want everyone to feel welcome.

Through this project we are also firmly encouraging people to come and meet up with friends and neighbours, old and new, to eat together.

« Sharing meals proves to be an exceptionally strong indicator of subjective wellbeing – on a par with income and unemployment. Those who share more meals with others report significantly higher levels of life satisfaction and positive affect, and lower levels of negative affect. This is true across ages, genders, countries, cultures, and regions. » Read more on that here.

Who knew that sharing meals can make you happier?

Come lunch with us and find out if that is true!
